“Death and Magic”

‘End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. … Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass… And then you see it.‘ Gandalf

Two artists, two realities, together forming the oldest conception in the world.
One belongs to humankind and is bound to death, the other transcends physical laws and is inhabited by mythical beings. Perhaps only through radical stylization can multimedia artists Lara and Hrbek express themselves without shame on the powerful themes of death and life beyond it, without sounding kitschy. Only a very sensitive and conscious person can move freely from one realm to the other. Ignorants will learn nothing.

„Koniec? Nie, podróż się tu nie kończy. […] I wtedy to widzisz”. Gandalf

He studied Visual Arts at the Faculty of Art and Design of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

His work includes works in graphics, painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and objects. The theme of his work reflects on the duality and parallelism between life and death, beauty and ugliness, light and darkness, the logical and the absurd. His series of Doppelgänger paintings focuses on the theme of repetition (twins, doubles, alter ego, reflections, copying, repetition, opposite poles) The Blind Men series (painting, engraving, drawing and objects) has as its subject the blindness, in a literal and metaphorical sense, all this from the paradoxical perspective of one who has the privilege of sight.

He has participated in more than 60 collective exhibitions, in America and Europe and individually in Mexico, Czech Republic, Spain, Slovakia and Poland. His work is part of public and private collections.

Matej is a multidisciplinary artist, he creates sculptures and objects, remarcable drawings and also engraves. Between the years 2011 and 2017 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (CZ) and spent one semester on an internship at the Universitade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. He is member of the international graphics group “Sin Rumbo Fijo” and his works are part of public and private collections. In the last years Matej was succesful in some competitions and took part in interna tional exhibitions, such as Amsterdame, Athens or Berlin. In 2023 he went on an artist residence in Villa Kebbel, Schwandorf, Germany and participated with a large installa tion to the Semana Profesional del Arte of Oviedo, in Spain

Matej’s work is spinning around mystical themes, such as dramas in the landscape, radiations, natural elements, magical creatures or pseudo-religious objects. His drawings depict huge phenomena taking place in nature and are radically but sensitively stylized. The use of colored pencils as well as his minimized expression belong to the world of children. But by using sophisticated compositions of shapes, colors and rhythms of drawing, Matej creates some kind of fusion between the artist and his inner child.

W ostatnich latach Matej odniósł sukcesy w kilku konkursach i brał udział w międzynarodowych wystawach, m.in. w Amsterdamie, Atenach czy Berlinie.
