"From Memory to Matter. The cabinet of memory"
The exhibition ‘From Memory to Matter. The Cabinet of Memory’ presents works by Alban Delume, an artist known for his original form of géonar. A géonar is a canvas skilfully stretched over a wooden frame; the artist paints on the transformed surface of the
canvas. At the beginning of his artistic career, Alban focused on the spatial aspects of géonars. He emphasized their shape by choosing colour and finish, being interested in the possibilities of this form and the world in between. Today, his works are still situated between the flat and the three-dimensional, between the literal and the symbolic, ultimately between the decorative artefacts and the conceptual work. However, in case of the current exhibition, the géonars are also situated between then and now, between emotion and information, between the lost and the preserved.
The works created for the Bacalarte exhibition still have the form of a géonar, but they take on a more intimate, personal character. In terms of the pictorial concept, they originate from the artist’s memory, from his time spent at school and his early adult years
in France. Symbols, texts, mathematical formulas and colours stem from a return to a period when knowledge still made sense and skills were both practiced and useful. When relationships and friendships were close, present and tangible. They come back from memory to matter as colours and decorations of géonars, resembling his grandmother’s porcelain or the colour of the sea in the department of Var or Côtes d’Armor in Brittany, where the artist used to spend his holidays.
The inspiration for the painted finish of the géonars came from textbooks, notebooks, sketchbooks and photos from artist’s school days, preparatory school and agricultural engineering studies – objects from the artist’s personal archive, which are about 20 years old. Some of them are presented as part of the exhibition. These objects also belong to the memory cabinet, and their personal dimension gives a lively meaning to the works exhibited.
‘I don’t refer to her, but I am inspired by Louise Bourgeois and her way of working with the past, with childhood memories. There is no comparison between our lives, but I also derive from my roots and personal stories, I am interested in the passing of time and the memories that disintegrate behind us. Personal traces that sometimes say a lot, but usually not enough. Those that we fiercely hold on to in order to preserve their essence.’
Alban Delume (born in 1985) is a self-taught artist from France. He grew up and went to school in Paris. He studied in Montpellier and worked both in and outside the art industry. Since 2017, he has been developing his own project of shaped canvases. As a refined craftsman, he produced unusual canvases for other artists. He now creates them for his own use. The artist currently lives and works in Łódź. The exhibition at the Bacalarte Gallery is his second solo exhibition in Poland.

Wystawa „From Memory to Matter.
Dorastał w Paryżu i tam chodził do szkoły. Artysta obecnie mieszka i pracuje w Łodzi.
